The NCVHS serves as the statutory [42 U.S.C. 242k(k)] public advisory body to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) for health data, statistics, privacy, and national health information policy and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The Committee advises the HHS Secretary, reports regularly to Congress on HIPAA implementation, and serves as a forum for interaction between HHS and interested private sector groups on a range of health data issues.
Subcommittees
Full Committee
Advises the HHS Secretary on health data, statistics, privacy, national health information policy, and the Department’s strategy to best address those issues. Assists and advises HHS in the implementation of the Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Executive Subcommittee
Serves as the coordinating leadership group for the Committee as a whole. Proposes Committee priorities to the full Committee, tracks the Committee work plan to ensure coordination of activity across the Subcommittees and conducts periodic review and update of the Committee strategic plan for consideration by the full Committee.

These Subcommittees and Workgroups were formed to accomplish specific objectives either for a designated period of time or until a specific project was completed. While the groups are inactive, the reports and rosters are included for historical, archival and reference purposes.
