Ms. Margaret Skurka is a health information management consultant to ambulatory and healthcare facilities and Professor Emeritus, Indiana University Northwest having devoted over three decades to leading the Health Information Management program at the College of Health and Human Services, Indiana University School of Medicine. She brings deep knowledge to the Committee’s charge to advise the Department on standards, with a lifetime of experience in coding and classification, (e.g., ICD-10 CM, CPT).  Ms. Skurka served as President of the International Federation of Health Information Management Association, 2010-2013, and Past President 2014-2017. She has held numerous international appointments, currently serving on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Family of International Classifications Education and Implementation Committee.  From 2005-2010, she served as co-chair of the WHO Joint Collaboration.  She also served as President of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the national HIM association in the U.S., a 72,000 member organization, and was elected to its national board by national ballot for a three-year term.  Ms. Skurka earned an MS from Purdue University and a BS from the University of Illinois. She has published numerous books and articles, most recently releasing the sixth edition of Health Information Management: Principles and Organization, in 2017.
