Meeting Objectives:

Identify a balanced and parsimonious set of domains through which multi-sectoral community partnerships can assess, measure and improve local health and well-being. These domains must encompass the key determinants of health and be consistent across all geographic levels.
Draft a Roadmap for HHS to advance well-informed, community-driven action by promoting such a set of domains along with suggested measures to facilitate greater availability and use of data within communities.

Do you feel that there are critical domains missing? If so, why, and what domain would you replace with such?
How can HHS provide neighborhood-level data in the identified areas and/or help communities with data collection or estimation?

NCVHS project goals

To contribute to the development of a consistent way of describing and measuring community health that goes beyond but includes health services delivery.
To help the Dept. of Health and Human Services 1) identify measures of community well-being and its determinants across all essential domains; 2) move toward parsimony in measurement at geographic levels from the neighborhood to the nation; and 3) enable partnerships among sectors at all geographic levels.

Intended workshop outcomes

A structured working session designed to:

Identify a balanced and parsimonious set of domains that multi-sectoral local partnerships can use to assess, measure, and improve local
health and well-being. The domains must encompass the key determinants of health and be consistent across all geographic levels.
Draft a Roadmap for HHS to advance well-informed, community-driven action by promoting such a set of domains, with suggested measures.

Workshop process

Introduction to the straw domains drafted by the Public Health 3.0 Initiative of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health
Responses to the straw domains from community, state, and other expert perspectives
Presentation of Federal perspectives (HHS and other data providers)
Facilitated small-group working sessions
Report-outs and integration: What have we learned? What work needs to be done?
Review status of the Roadmap to be proposed to HHS

Guiding questions

Does the proposed mix of domains resonate as ones that describe a healthy, vital community?
Should any of the proposed domains not be on the list of the top 10-12 domains?
Are critical domains missing?
How can HHS and other agencies provide neighborhood-level data in the identified areas and/or help communities with data collection or estimation?
